ADULT EDUCATION OFFERINGS

FALL 2008

We are pleased to announce our Fall 2008 Adult Education Program in the Bellefonte Area School District. Course descriptions as well as course costs are listed below. In order for a class to be held, there must be ten (10) students enrolled in the class. In some cases, class size is limited, and registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration for this session of Adult Education will remain open until September 19, 2008. Interested persons should complete the Registration Form and mail it, along with a check payable to Bellefonte Area School District for the amount of the class to Bellefonte Area School District, Adult Education Registration, 318 North Allegheny Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823. Registrations can be made over the phone, but will be held until a check for the class fee is received. Please do not send cash in the event that we do not receive the required 10 people for a class. Any questions regarding the Adult Education Program can be directed to the Superintendent’s Office at 355-4814, Ext. 3002.

Introduction to Bread Baking: This course will cover the basics of yeast bread baking. It is a hands-on introduction where the class participates in the complete bread baking cycle. Students will make dinner rolls, sticky buns, and oatmeal bread. Topics covered include: types of yeast and the proper handling of them, mixing and kneading, proofing, hand techniques for shaping, and baking of the products. The students will make the dough in class and take the items home to bake the following day. All of the ingredients for the workshop will be provided to the students. The materials fee is covered in the cost of the class. Cost for the class will be $70 for district residents; $80 for non-district residents. The class will meet from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Mondays for three weeks (September 22, 2008, to October 6, 2008). Students need to bring a mixing bowl and sheet pan to the first night’s class. Whole Grain Breads: They’re back! Whole Grain Breads are healthy and good for you. Do you remember the 60’s health food craze and whole grain meant hockey puck bread? Is the fear of heavy bread holding you back from whole wheat? Come explore with us the wonders of whole grain breads. We’ll use preferment’s to lighten up our breads and give the bread a complex flavor. Plus we use soakers to enrich them with various whole grains to add different textures to our bread. All of the ingredients for the workshop will be provided to the students. The materials fee is covered in the cost of the class. Cost for the class will be $70 for district residents; $80 for non-district residents. The class will meet from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Mondays for three weeks October 13, 2008, to October 27, 2008). Students need to bring a mixing bowl and sheet pan to the first night’s class. Signing with Baby and Me: Baby & one or two adults who interact with the same infant or toddler. This class meets on Tuesday nights for four weeks from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. September 23, 2008 to October 14, 2008. Cost for the class is $25 for district residents; $45 for non-district residents and cost for the textbook is $15.84 (includes PA state sales tax). Signing with Baby – Adult Only Class: This class is for those adults who feel more comfortable without bringing baby to class. This class meets on Tuesday nights for four weeks from 7:15 p.m. – 8:15 p.m. September 23, 2008, to October 14, 2008. Cost for the class is $25 for district residents; $45 for non-district residents and cost for the textbook is $15.84 (includes PA state sales tax). Pizza Party: Learn how to make hearth baked pizzas like a pro. In this class students will learn how to make outstanding pizza crusts by retarding the dough fermentation. Then they will shape, top, and bake their own pizzas to share with the class. Also, students will make a batch of their own take home dough for tomorrow night's dinner. Besides the traditional topped pizza, some of the featured pies are grilled chicken with barbeque sauce, caramelized onion, steak and Bleu cheese, white pizza with caramelized garlic, and of course Pizza Margarita. The meal will be finished off with the chocolate pizza – Nutella, three different dark chocolates and white chocolate. Students need to bring a healthy appetite to class. No one will go away hungry from this class. All of the ingredients for the workshop will be provided to the students. The materials fee is covered in the cost of the class. Cost for the class will be $35 for district residents; $45 for non-district residents. The class will meet from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. Instructor: Curtis Knepper

Biscotti: Biscotti are considered everyday food in Italy. They are "twice baked" cookies that are dry, crunchy and delicious when dipped in your favorite beverage. Traditionally they are almond flavored and are dipped in coffee, cocoa or red wine. They are a common breakfast treat in Italy or served as a snack in coffee shops. Because of their recent popularity in the United States, they are fashionable and very expensive. Biscotti are easy to make and a whole batch costs less then a single biscotti at a coffee shop. In this class, students will prepare and bake their own biscotti. All of the ingredients for the workshop will be provided to the students. Bagels: One of the greatest baked delights is a chewy bagel. In this class we will make a true bagel, thick crusted, dense, and boiled. We use overnight fermentation to maximize the flavor and extend their shelf life. Then we shape them using the old style wrapped around your hand method. Also, students will make a batch of their own take home dough for tomorrow mornings breakfast. The materials fee is covered in the cost of the class. Cost for the class will be $40 for district residents; $50 for non-district residents. The class will meet from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2008. Students need to bring a mixing bowl and sheet pan to class. Instructor: Curtis Knepper

Apple Dumplings: Apple dumplings are a central Pennsylvania treat. Hot, juicy, and slightly sweet apple dumplings are an all-time family favorite. Served with warm maple syrup and ice cream, they make an excellent ending to any meal. Warm them up and serve them with milk for a hearty farm breakfast. We’ll make a pan of dumplings to take home using grandma’s old time recipe. As with all classes, there will be a critical taste test of our product. All of the ingredients for the workshop will be provided to the students. The materials fee is covered in the cost of the class. Cost for the class will be $30 for district residents; $40 for non-district residents. The class will meet from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2008. Students need to bring a sharp paring knife, mixing bowl and sheet pan to class. Instructor: Curtis Knepper

Photography: This course will be for the person who wants to become a better photographer. Some of the topics to be included in this class are: 1) How film and digital cameras work and what it takes to get great pictures; 2) How film and digital images are different and how they are the same; 3) Accessories you need with either type of cameras and what they can do for your images; 4) What software programs you can use and how you use them to enhance your images; 5) How you get hard copies of your digital images or get digital images from film; 6) What is workflow and how it affects you; 7) How to get professional quality portraits of your family without expensive equipment; 8) How to frame, mat, and display your photographs. This class meets on Tuesday nights for ten weeks from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (September 23, 2008 – November 25, 2008). Cost for the class is $55 for district residents; $70 for non-district residents. Cookies: Just in time for the holidays! A chance to make some easy, unusual and tasty cookies that store well. Come and join us as we make between 4 to 8 different kinds of cookies, including lavender cookies, coconut/pecan bars, raspberry walnut bars, Italian sesame cookies, and a sinfully delicious chocolate espresso cookie. There will be a small additional charge for supplies which you can paid at the beginning of the class. Cost for the class will be $20 for district residents; $30 for non-district residents. The class will meet from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Instructor: Darlene Weener

American Sign Language for Beginners: It’s never too late to learn a second language. American Sign Language is the third most used language in the United Stated. ASL uses movements of the hands and facial expressions, as English uses sound. ASL signs are made with a specific handshape, palm orientation, location and movement, when one of these changes so does the meaning of the sign. Come learn ASL, its history, Deaf culture and proper syntax. I will also be using signing games, songs and stories to help you remember the signs. This class meets on Wednesday nights for 6 weeks from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., September 24, 2008, to October 29, 2008. The cost for the class is $40 for district residents; $50 for non-district residents. The text book for this class will be "A Basic Course in American Sign Language" by Tom Humphries, C. Padden & T. Desserts: Cream Puffs! Strawberry Cream-Filled Roulade! Peanut Butter Cheesecake! Mint Volcano Cakes! Wow! This class will be mostly instruction with some hands on; however, coffee and taste testing at the end of each session is a must. Instructor provides ingredients and recipes; some cookware and utensils may need to be provided by the students. The class will meet on Wednesdays for four weeks from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (September 24, 2008, to October 15, 2008). Cost for the class is $45 for district residents; $55 for non-district residents. There is an additional cost of approximately $10 to cover the cost of the ingredients needed for the class. 2-Hour Signing with Baby Workshop: A class designed for those who are unable to commit to a weekly class but still want to learn how to communicate with their child using ASL. Your choice to bring your little one to class. This class meets from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2008. Cost for the class is $15 for district residents; $25 for non-district residents and cost for the textbook is $15.84 (includes PA state sales tax). The textbook will be available the night of class. Small Animal Care Course for Adults: In our busy lives today, we continue to want to add the interaction between animal and man into our lives. Through this course as will overview the different species of small animals. Each week we will discuss a new species while working with hands on experiences in each class. Participants will be asked to handle each type of animal; however, it is not required. We will discuss proper housing, care and restraint techniques for each species, while discussing the development and current uses of the animal. The last week of the course we will cover basic first aid for each species. The class will meet on Thursdays for six weeks from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (September 25, 2008, to October 30, 2008). Cost for the class is $30 for district residents; $40 for non-district residents. Instructor: Eric Rubenstein

Pasta Plus: Instruction on a variety of pasta dinners including Greek Lasagna, Fettuccini Alfredo, Penne Pasta Mix, Orzo and Lamb Chop Bake. Each session will vary slightly in format depending on the menu. However, each session will end with a sit down taste test. Each class will include both instruction and hands on participation. Some cookware and utensils may need to be provided by the students. The class will meet on Thursdays for four weeks from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (September 25, 2008, to October 16, 2008). Cost for the class is $45 for district residents; $55 for non-district residents. There is an additional cost of approximately $30 to cover the cost of the ingredients needed for the class. Get Fit With Friends: Do you want to have fun with friends while getting fit?  This is your class!  Various aerobic videos including Kickboxing, Step-Aerobics and other innovative fitness workouts will be utilized.  The class will meet in the auxiliary gymnasium at the Middle School for eight weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. (October 7, 2008 – November 25, 2008).  Cost for the class is $40 for district residents; $60 for non-district residents.  Instructor: Kathy Baird
